The on-set of fruit fly was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back!
After 13 years of living in Melbourne, Wendy and Pat Young decided a 5 acre hobby farm in the Warby Ranges near Glenrowan would be a wonderful lifestyle move in 1978.
The work was hard on their intensive, orchard plot growing plums and mixed fruit for the local market but they both loved the wonderful landscape and views.
Mid way through 8 years of drought their property was infested with fruit fly in 2005. As Wendy put it, “that was just about the straw that broke the camel’s back”.
Pat wanted to soldier on however, and so they did until 2012 when major health issues struck Pat. One day after returning from the Doctor’s in the car Wendy, realising she had a captive audience, she hit Pat with the ultimatum, “We are selling up now and you have no choice about this”
As the self appointed leader of the clan however, Pat responded with: “Let’s just wait until 2015 and then we’ll reassess the situation”.
However Wendy’s quick response of “I’m going now and you can come if you want to” abruptly terminated the discussion. The farm was sold and the search started for somewhere new to live.
They found Kensington Gardens Shepparton in February 2013 after seeing a TV commercial. They were both immediately impressed by the Manager, Peter Stanbrook’s extensive knowledge and Peter’s Office Administrator, Ros Gurr’s great back up and the extraordinary facilities and great value for money homes. The deal was done, Pat’s health stabilized, the fruit fly disappeared and there was more water than you could shake a stick at.
They both finally agreed that they loved their new life. “This is a really exciting adventure. You can do as much or as little as you like, the house is so soundproof you wouldn’t even know we had neighbours…we really love this”.
